Advantages of Steel Over Aluminum Molds

Steel Injection Molds Have the Ability to Make Complex Parts

Sometimes, a part design can't be made simple to mold using an aluminum mold. This limitation is the reason why many companies require steel injection mold.

More Surface Finish Options with Steel Injection Molds

Due to the high-density nature of steel, steel injection mold features more surface finishes than aluminum ones. However, unlike with steel, aluminum doesn't have a limited number of surface finishes. The number of surface finishes that can be done with an aluminum injection mold is limited. For custom applications, the surface finish options are not as limited as those with steel molds.

Ease of Design Modifications

Due to the properties of both metals, plastic injection mold modifications are limited to the parts' design. However, if the part's size and shape are still the same, the steel mold can be modified using welding. For instance, if your part has a good chance of needing a modification, a steel injection mold can help.

Less Flash

Since steel is harder than aluminum, it has a better chance of causing flash on the part.

Steel Injection Mold Tooling Can Produce Parts in Higher Volume

Due to the properties of steel, injection mold tools can last longer than their non-metal counterparts. This is because they can withstand harsh conditions through heat treatment.

Steel Molds Have High Durability

Performance Aside from being more durable, steel injection mold tools are also more prone to wear and tear resistance. Also, due to their properties, steel injection mold tools can endure non-conformities in the product. However, for aluminum machines, they must be polished or anodized with nickel to reach the same hardness. This increases the cost of production. One of the many advantages of using steel injection mold is that they can provide a lifetime guarantee. This means that if something goes wrong, we will pay for the repairs.
