The process involves a chemical reaction taking place within the tool. This reaction produces a plastic component known as a thermoset. The two components that make up the polyurethane are mixed before the injection into the tool. This produces a low-cost, complex part that can be made in low quantities.


The design freedom is possible in the form of thick and thin wall sections that can't be molded using injection. These sections can be made to fit in with the uniform shrink characteristics of the product.The uniform shrink characteristics make these components ideal for Injection Molding.


Reaction injection molding is used for many different types of parts. While the bumpers for vehicles are produced through this process, many applications are for complex parts that can only be made in quantities less than 5,000 units.
