Plastic Low Volume Reliable Injection Molding Tool

There are various processes that can be used to produce low-volume plastic parts. These procedures are usually associated with the prototyping process. Due to the complexity of hardware design and the cost of production, it is difficult to get wrong. As a result, many companies are looking for ways to reduce their hardware costs while still offering the same quality. As customer expectations rise, more and more companies are looking for ways to test new products and markets at lower volume. As a hardware company, what are your options for low-volume production, and what are the advantages and disadvantages of each?

There are various processes that can be used to produce low-volume plastic parts. These procedures are usually associated with the prototyping process. Due to the complexity of hardware design and the cost of production, it is difficult to get wrong. As a result, many companies are looking for ways to reduce their hardware costs while still offering the same quality. As customer expectations rise, more and more companies are looking for ways to test new products and markets at lower volume. As a hardware company, what are your options for low-volume production, and what are the advantages and disadvantages of each?

3D printing

Due to the advantages of 3D printing, it is becoming more prevalent in many parts and products. Its ability to produce low-cost parts without having to spend on tooling is also beneficial for minimizing initial investment. 3D printing is fast and reliable, and it eliminates the need for fixed tooling. Its high accuracy and quality are also guaranteed. Due to the various advantages of 3D printing, its adoption is also becoming more prevalent. However, it still requires a careful evaluation of the various options.

FDM and SLA are typically used for production purposes. While both require the use of various materials, the former is more commonly used for functional parts and the latter for production parts. The former provides a superior surface finish, but it can also be prone to degradation over time. FDM has a wide variety of thermoplastics and various materials to choose from. SLS is a good choice for production and non-production parts due to its ability to print in a tough PA (nylan) resin. Other processes like SLA can also provide a superior surface finish, but they are also prone to degradation over time.

The various factors that go into 3D printing are typically the biggest limiting factors.

Vacuum casting

With vacuum casting, it is possible to get close to the production of quality parts using silicone and polyurethane resin. This process is very cheap compared to other injection mold tools. Aside from being able to produce plastic parts, vacuum casting can also be used to mold other components. Compared to 3D printing, vacuum casting offers better options for surface finishes, a wider selection of materials, and the ability to produce parts without painting. Vacuum casting can also produce rubber-like parts that offer more durability than the 3D-printed alternatives. Since vacuum casting is a quick and easy method to produce low-volume parts, it can be prone to getting expensive if the number of pieces exceeds 50.

Rapid injection molding

Various techniques such as reducing EDM machining and using standard mold bases can help minimize costs. Doing so allows you to get started with low-cost parts in a shorter time frame. This process is very competitive when it comes to creating low-cost parts. Rapid injection molding can also be used for parts that require large quantities. Rapid injection molding is typically a good option for companies that are expecting low- to mid-volume production. It can produce parts at a low initial cost. This method works by building actual tools instead of just printing an idea. The result is usually lower cost per part and quicker production. There are a variety of options when it comes to producing low-volume plastic parts. Choosing the right one depends on the complexity of your project and the available materials.
